Pico

With 2,350 m, Pico Mountain was elected as one of the 7 Wonders of Portugal in 2010 and is the highest peak in the country, attracting mountaineers from all over the world.  The town of Lajes do Pico, on the southern coast is the main centre of whale watching in the region.  Close to Faial and São Jorge Islands, the Vineyards of Pico were classified in 2004 as World Heritage by UNESCO, due to the unique character of its conception:
the vines are nestled on lava ground, inside tight walls of loose basalt, which serve as protection from the ocean winds but allow the sun to enter.

Seen from afar, these vineyards give us an idea of men’s hardship through different centuries.
This landscape includes Lajido da Criação Velha and Lajido de Santa Luzia.

The diversity of Pico’s fauna and flora is present here with rare and endemic species, world-protected.
