Terceira Island is one of the islands with the most historic heritage. Here docked galleons full of spices from the East and America, carrying gold, silver, fabrics, pepper, cloves and other riches, which made the island’s capital, Angra do Heroísmo, a living and historic location, recognized by UNESCO in 1983, as a World Heritage Site.
Here you can explore monuments and beautiful views, visited every year by thousands of tourists.
You will also find endemic flora (Erica azorica, Laurus azorica, Picconia azorica), volcanic remnants (caves and grottos), where interesting and precious geological formations and endemic living organisms can be found only in this region. Whether you practice speleology or go for a novice tour, you cannot miss these locations.
There are plenty of festivities on Terceira Island, especially from May to October, where color and tradition make Terceira festivities a huge attraction for everyone, including the neighbouring islands.
The São João Festivities, known in Terceira as Sanjoaninas festivities, are the largest profane celebration in the Azores Islands.
