The archipelago of the Azores consists of nine islands, divided into three groups: the Eastern Group, of Santa Maria and São Miguel, the Central Group, of São Jorge, Graciosa, Terceira, Pico and Faial, and lastly, the Western Group of Flores and Corvo.
The entire archipelago has an area of 2335 km² (902 mi2) in the Atlantic Ocean, 760 nautical miles (1,500 Km) from Lisbon and 2,100 nautical miles (3,900 Km) from the East Coast of the North America.
The Azores Islands have privileged climactic conditions, with mild temperatures, due to the Gulf’s influence, without huge variations year-round: the average winter temperature is of 13ºC (55ºF) and 23ºC (73ºF) in the summer, and the water temperature fluctuates between 17ºC and 24ºC (63ºF and75ºF).
