International Camellia Society Accolades

Terra Nostra Garden in Furnas Valley on S. Miguel Island has been given the exclusive “Garden of Excellence” accolade by the International Camellia Society (ICS), judged in this year’s international conference which took place in Pontevedra, Galicia, Spain and gathered world experts on camellias who decided to recognize Terra Nostra Garden.

Dating back to 1775, Terra Nostra Garden has a collection of more than 600 varieties of camellias, from all over the world, largely surpassing the minimum of 200 species requirement of ICS.  Terra Nostra Garden is run by a full time team of specialists, who have been working the garden daily for many years and know not only about camellias but all the species in the garden, including gingko biloba, cycads, endemic Azores flora or even the rare Victoria Cruziana Orb., a giant water lily.

In addition to Terra Nostra Garden, Pena Garden in Sintra was also recognized by the International Camellia Society.  If you would like to visit Terra Nostra Garden, we recommend you stay at the beautiful Terra Nostra Garden Hotel, completely renovated in 2013, inserted in Terra Nostra Garden, which features the Thermal Swimming Pool continuously replenished by Furnas Volcano at a steady temperature of 39ºC (102ºF), the perfect relaxation spot at the end of the day after walking the Garden.
